obviously the guy was a murderous piece of fucking shit, but this is still poignant and sad:

"Don't shoot," Saddam said, according to a military source quoted by Newsweek. "I am Saddam Hussein, the president of the Republic of Iraq."

i agree that he was a not-so-good dude, but man.

when i heard about this, i was at work, so obviously couldn't get to an online newspaper or a tv (and it wasn't in the morning paper). so. i didn't really know anything until later (well, for that matter, i still know little because i was too busy working on finals to watch the news).

anyway.

while eating lunch, i was watching tv and such. and i watched the speech dubya gave, and yea. meanwhile, they keep showing the video of the doctor checking out saddam. logically, one would assume they are looking him over to make sure it's him, right? well. this woman sits next to me and starts speaking loudly about how "i don't care if he's healthy or not, go ahead and kill him!" and blah. it made me mad. a, that she was more worried about vengence than whether or not it was actually him. and b, i'm not too fond of the death penalty in general. i don't think that he deserves to get away with stuff he did. but at the same time, i don't think it's helpful for us to kill him. because...it just isn't. it leads no where, except to add another casualty to the list. but anyways.

someone came up to me today and said "hey, did ya hear? bush was officially re-elected." and it got me to thinking. she's right. the press is doing so much flag-waving right now and yay-bushing, that he has a high high chance of being re-elected now, when a few days ago people couldn't wait for him to be out of office. it just amuses me to see how the tables have turned. especially when...didn't the us put hussein in power? hmm. i don't remember correctly.

and yea. you are right about that quote being poignant and sad. kind of like how he was reduced to hiding in a 6-8 foot hole. that's just sad.

anyways. i should get back to my paper, that hasn't made any progress at all...
